A Character.AI alternative that runs locally

Windows 11 · Local-first · Updated 10 August 2026

People searching for a Character.AI alternative are usually after one of three things: conversations that do not run out, a character that stays the same from one week to the next, or a setup where the transcript is not sitting on a company’s servers.

Asiden answers all three by moving the model onto your machine. It is an AI companion for Windows 11 that runs locally — unlimited conversations, memories on your own drive, no account for local use.

1. Why people go looking

Hosted character platforms are extraordinary pieces of engineering, and they are also, unavoidably, shared infrastructure. Everyone is drawing from the same pool of servers, which produces a familiar set of frustrations: waits at peak times, replies that vary in quality depending on load, and behaviour that shifts when the underlying model is updated.

Then there is the conversation itself. On a hosted platform the transcript sits in an account, governed by a policy you did not write, and available to systems you cannot inspect. Most people are not doing anything they would mind being seen. They would just prefer it not to be a question at all.

Running the model locally removes the shared pool entirely. There is no queue you are standing in, because you are the only person on your graphics card.

2. Running the character on your own PC

Asiden installs a local language model on your Windows 11 machine. Every local conversation is generated there. That has three concrete effects.

Nothing is metered

There is no message allowance, no daily reset and no token budget. You can talk for six hours on a Sunday and nothing counts down.

Nothing changes under you

The model on your disk is the model on your disk. It is not silently swapped mid-conversation, so a companion’s voice stays recognisable week to week.

Nothing leaves

Your conversations, your companion’s memories and anything screen vision observes stay on your computer. Optional managed cloud models, voice and vision are available if you want them, but they are opt-in and the app tells you on screen when a request is going to the cloud. The Privacy Notice sets out exactly what is sent in that case.

3. Four written characters — or write your own

Asiden ships four signature companions, each properly written, each with a consistent voice and its own look:

  • Mei — protective, focused, loyal. Keeps you grounded and ready for what is next.
  • Lily — playful, curious, optimistic. Turns an ordinary day into a slightly brighter one.
  • Jae — calm, thoughtful, reliable. Steady, and there to help you move forward with clarity.
  • Sasha — bold, honest, independent. Straightforward, and pushes you to be your best.

Beyond those four, ten further personality presets — Nurturing, Chill, Sunny, Shy, Witty, Cocky, Bratty, Flirty, Tsundere and Edgy — can be applied to any avatar. And if none of them is quite right, the custom personality wizard builds a new companion from your description — her temperament, how she speaks, what she cares about — and that personality is then fixed, so she stays recognisable from one week to the next. Authoring can run on your own local model, so a custom companion costs nothing and never leaves your machine.

The bet is that depth beats breadth: a companion who remembers the interview you were nervous about in March, and asks how the job is going in June, is worth more than a directory you scroll.

5. Common questions

Can I make my own character?

Yes. Alongside the four written companions, Asiden has a custom personality wizard that builds a new companion from your description. Authoring can run on your own local model, so it costs nothing and stays on your machine. Custom personalities are covered by the Terms of Use.

Do I need a powerful PC?

For a good local experience, yes — a modern Windows 11 machine with a capable discrete graphics card. Weaker hardware still runs Asiden, more slowly.

Is Asiden affiliated with Character.AI?

No. Asiden is an independent product from Asiden Labs Ltd and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Character.AI or Character Technologies, Inc. Product names are used only to describe what people are comparing.
